The National H-Blocks Armagh Committee announce that nine prisoners are to contest the general election.

At a press conference members of the National H-Block Armagh Committee including Bernadatte McAliskey, Daithí Ó Conaill and Gerry Adams and chairman Father Piarais Ó Dúil confirmed that they have given their support to prisoners who will put themselves forward as candidates in the forthcoming general election. The reason behind this is that

Prisoner candidates will highlight the H-Block hunger strike.

In response to a question from a reporter, Father Piarais Ó Dúil affirms that this is a direct challenge to Taoiseach Charles Haughey's stance on the H-Block issue,

We are going to focus our campaign upon these actions that Mr Haughey could have taken.
