Launch of festival to mark 100 years since the birth of Samuel Beckett.

The festival programme to mark the centenary of the birth of Samuel Beckett was formally announced in Dublin Castle this evening. Numerous events will take place in April to celebrate the work of the Nobel Prize winner. Among those taking part in the launch was Bono, who had given the playwright a copy of one of U2's most successful albums.

Actor Barry McGovern reads an excerpt from Beckett's novel 'Watt’ (1953).

While there is much praise for Samuel Beckett’s work at the event, his work is not for everyone.

Popular opinion is a little more lukewarm towards the complex artist.
