The volume of Christmas post is down. Is this related to a rise in the price of stamps?

It is the time of year when post office employees work harder than ever, as Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (P&T) Gerry Hickey observed when he visited one Dublin sorting office today.

The volume of post being sorted however is down by a quarter of what it usually would be. Is this a direct result of an increase in the price of stamps by the P&T?

That may not necessarily be the reason, says Dublin postal district controller Patrick Hickey, as the British postal system is also witnessing a similar drop in traffic which they say is unaffected by a hike in their postage charges.

While acknowledging that the Christmas card trade is not profitable, it is supported by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs, as its benefits go beyond sending the season’s greetings,

For the community I think it's a very good thing, it puts a lot of money into circulation.
