Galway man could break the record as the oldest recording artist in the world.

Michael Breathnach was born in Sylane near Tuam in 1886. He received a scholarship to study at Galway University and went on to become secretary of the Department of Education. He became a close friend of Éamon de Valera.

After he retired from the civil service, Michael Breathnach translated several books into Irish and wrote an Irish history of Europe.

A keen singer he has recently contributed to a record titled 'Reflections of Ireland' by the Sylane Singers and Friends in aid of the Sylane Hurling Club.

At 99, he could make it into the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest recording artist in the world.

Now living at St Joseph’s Convalescent Home in Dublin, officials from the Sylane Hurling Club recently visited to make a special presentation. Michael Breathnach entertained them with a performance of the recording that could write him into the Guinness Book of Records.
