Journalist and television presenter Jill Dando was shot and killed on the doorstep of her home in London.

Following news of the murder of Jill Dando the 37 year old presenter of the BBC programme 'Crimemwatch' neighbours and members of the public left flowers near her home. The entire street remained closed as a forensic team continued to examine the scene of the crime.

Locals people describe the atmosphere as horrible in the area in the aftermath of the murder.

At a news conference at Scotland Yard the officer in charge of the investigation Chief Inspector Hamish Campbell said the killer may have been waiting for Jill Dando when she returned from a shopping trip.

The killer did not wear gloves or a mask and there was no evidence that a silencer was used. The police are examining all options at this stage of the investigation.

A search has also been taking place along a stretch of the River Thames after reports of a sighting of a man in the area matching the killer's description.
