The Catholic Archbishop of Dublin clashes with the Taoiseach John Bruton on the issue of divorce.

As the debate over divorce continues in the lead up to the referendum a pastoral letter issued by Dr. Desmond Connell states that when divorce is legalised, it destroys the value of marriage rather than strengthening it.

The pastoral letter is being read to congregations at all masses in the Dublin diocese. The Archbishop describes the the acknowledgement of second marriages by the church as "cheating".

The Catholic Archbishop of Tuam, Doctor Michael Neary, says that divorce will multiply the trauma and heartbreak of marital breakdown.
