Technology being deployed to help retail stores prevent shoplifting in Dublin city centre.

When the security surveillance scheme started, it covered eight major stores, but has now been extended to sixteen Dublin shops. When suspected shoplifters are asked to leave a store, a central control spreads the word. If anything unusual or suspicious is seen, staff can call a 24-hour control room, which then alerts other shops in the area. Ian Frawley, director of Ross Security says,

It's working very, very well. It's been going for about two months. The first month was trial and obviously people were concerned to see whether the system was effective or not. But we're now handling between 120 and 150 messages per day.
