Is a spate of car theft and joyriding in Dublin exaggerated by the media?
Fintan O'Toole investigates the journalistic hype that has managed to convince the people of Dublin that they are living in a state of war in this report for 'Slants', the 1980s media series. He talks to some car thieves who describe the motivation to joyride, and their thought on how joyriding is reported by the media.
It is just the fun in getting chased and all. The fun is not getting caught anyway. Once you get away that is the fun out of it.
Fintan O'Toole also speaks to two commentators one of whom maintains there was a major crime wave, while the other insists that the newspapers have not fully verified what they are reporting.
This episode of 'Slants' was broadcast 18 June 1985.
