Dublin footballers opened their defence of their Leinster title in 2006 by travelling to Longford.

A hot June day and 16,000 the majority of them travelling supporters packed into Pearse Park to watch Longford play Dublin in the opening round of the Leinster Football Championship.

Longford had the better of the first half and at one stage were ahead by 0-05 to 0-01. A struggling Dublin got a lucky break after a mistake from the Longford defence allowed Mark Vaughan to score the only goal of the game.

In the second half Dublin lead again before Longford replied with 4 points in a row to trail by 1-11 to 0-12. During a nervy closing minutes Dublin held out for a win with a final score of 1-12 to 0-13.
