The library's collection of rare Biblical and oriental manuscripts and art belonged to its benefactor, the Irish-American mining millionaire Chester Beatty.

Reporter Anne Binchy talks to Chester Beatty outside the library on Shrewsbury Road in 1962. He tells her all about his travels and how he built up his collection. He decided to leave his treasures to Ireland because he was so fond of the country.

I finally decided to build a library and then I finally decided that when I die, I want to leave it to Ireland.

The Chester Beatty Library is now housed in Dublin Castle.
