Time Magazine has named US President-elect Donald Trump as their Person of the Year.

The magazine cited the upheaval in American politics brought about by the election campaign and victory of the New York businessman as reason for the decision.

"It's hard to measure the scale of his disruption," Time said in its announcement, noting Mr Trump's eclectic career as real estate magnate and reality television star before winning the highest office in the land.

"For those who believe this is all for the better, Trump's victory represents a long-overdue rebuke to an entrenched and arrogant governing class," it said.

The magazine said its short list included Mr Trump's rival in the 2016 presidential race, Democrat Hillary Clinton, as well as Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan and singer Beyonce.

"It's a great honour, it means a lot," Mr Trump told NBC's Today show in an interview shortly after the announcement.

Meanwhile Mr Trump has filled top jobs for his administration with Linda McMahon, the former CEO of professional wrestling company WWE and wife of wrestling kingpin Vince McMahon, to head the Small Business Administration.

Mr Trump has taken part in WWE events in the past and has close ties to the McMahons. He is a member of the WWE Hall of Fame.

Mr Trump has also tapped Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency, drawing loud criticism from Democrats who warn the fossil fuel ally is a climate change denier.
