A man is in a critical condition in hospital after an assault in Co Monaghan overnight.
Gardaí say they discovered the man lying unconscious on Main Street, Carrickmacross shortly before 4am this morning.
The injured man was brought to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda before being transferred to Beaumont Hospital.
The suspect is believed to have fled the scene on foot via an alleyway off Main Street.
Gardaí say there was a large number of people in the area at the time of the assault.
They appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward; in particular, those who may have been in the vicinity of Main Street, from 3.30am to 4.15am, and who may have a recording of the incident on their phone or dash cam.
