An avalanche roaring down mountains and towards a highway was captured on camera by a driver in Colorado on Sunday.

Describing it as an "exciting, but pretty nerve-racking" experience, the motorist stopped his car to avoid the large plume of snow powder crashing towards the road and covering vehicles ahead.

This footage is from the Ten Mile Canyon between Frisco and Copper Mountain.

Several avalanche warnings had been issued in Colorado following heavy snowfall over the weekend.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Centre called this particular occurrence a "natural avalanche", adding that these happen during heavy snow periods.

The Colorado Department of Transportation, which did not report any injuries, said not enough snow made it on the road to affect drivers or cause road closures.
