US tourist taken to hospital after collapsing at Blarney Castle

An American tourist is recovering in hospital in Cork, after he was airlifted from the top of Blarney Castle having suffered a cardiac arrest.

The man, who is in his mid-50s and visiting Ireland with his wife, had climbed the steps of the castle to kiss the Blarney Stone when he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest at around 9.45am.

He was treated at the scene by staff from the castle, by a first responder from the area and by an off-duty policeman from the US.

They began CPR and were soon joined by ambulance paramedics and fire fighters from Cork City Fire Service.

A defibrillator was also deployed.

The man regained consciousness and was stabilised at the scene.

The man was airlifted from the roof of the castle by the crew of Coast Guard rescue helicopter 115 from Shannon and transferred to a waiting ambulance before being taken to Cork University Hospital.

It is understood that the man is currently in a stable condition.
