A technical examination has been carried out at the house in which a woman in her 50s died and a man in his 60s was seriously injured in Co Cavan last night.
The woman, who is 55 years old, has been named locally as Annie Heyneman.
Gardaí were alerted to what they described as a serious incident at around 9.30pm in the rural townland of Kilnavert just outside Ballyconnell.
A man in his 30s was arrested at a separate location, and is being questioned at a garda station in Cavan.
A murder investigation is under way, and gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the Kilnavert area between 8.30pm and 9.30pm last night and who may have video or dashcam footage to contact them.
However, gardaí are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.
Gardaí are examining an area in Ballyconnell village close to where the man was arrested.
A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on the body of the woman, who is originally from the area and is a mother of five grown-up children.
