Hundreds of people have attended the funeral of Stephen Marron, who was killed in a collision in Co Monaghan on Tuesday.

The 47-year-old father-of-two, from Drumillard in Castleblayney, died after another car collided with his as he was parked outside a fast food restaurant, where he worked as a delivery driver.

Mr Marron's funeral mass was held in St Mary's Church in Castleblayney, where he served as an assistant sacristan.

A number of symbols representing Mr Marron's life were carried to the alter at the start of the funeral mass.

His nine-year-old daughter Andrea carried two family photographs, while his six-year-old son Franco carried a plaque the children were going to give him at Christmas.

In his homily, chief celebrant Cannon Shane McCaughey said Mr Marron's death has caused much heartache and grief for his wife Helen, his children, the rest of his family and his community.

Mourners were also told that "the only reason he was working on Tuesday night was because he had planned an outing with Helen and the children this weekend", to see Santa in Galway.

Canon McCaughey said Mr Marron had made a big contribution to the local area.

"In the community Stephen was the go-to man for a myriad of things and no-one who sought his help ever refused.

"From collection prescriptions for the elderly and accompanying them to appointments, to being treasurer with the hurling club and training the young hurlers and soccer players".

A number of local sports clubs formed a guard of honour outside the church as the cortège arrived.

Garda Michael Devlin, who was also injured during Tuesday night’s incident, is still recovering and members of his family attended Mr Marron's funeral.
