A national 'thank you' for members of the emergency services was held in Dublin this afternoon.

Around 1,000 personnel and their vehicles paraded down O'Connell Street as part of National Services Day.

They travelled to Dublin Castle where there was a skills display for members of the public.

The aim of the event is to heighten the public's awareness of the role played by the security and emergency services in protecting the citizens of the state.

The annual day is billed as a celebration of all emergency services personnel who go above and beyond the call of duty.

Firefighters, gardaí, ambulance workers and many others took part in today's event.

There are around 35,000 frontline and voluntary emergency workers in Ireland.
