A young man has been critically injured after he was struck by a car on the Drumcondra Road in Dublin early this morning.

The collision occurred at around 4.10am between the junctions of Griffith Avenue and Home Farm Road.

A 19-year-old man was taken to the Mater Hospital where his condition is said to be critical.

The male driver of the car was uninjured.

The road was closed in both directions for a number of hours during morning rush hour and there was major traffic disruption in the northside area on routes into and out of the city centre.

Drumcondra Road reopened shortly after 9am.
