A 20-year-old man has been charged in court with assaulting another man who died early yesterday.
Niall Hewison, of the Clarinwood Estate, Tramore, Co Waterford, appeared before Waterford District Court this afternoon.
He was charged with assault causing harm to 54-year-old Edmund Rice.
Mr Rice was from Northern Ireland but had been living in Waterford for a number of years.
The charges relate to a row that broke out at a taxi rank in the seaside town of Tramore at about 2.15am yesterday morning.
Mr Rice was allegedly assaulted at Lower Strand Street in the town.
He was taken to University Hospital Waterford where he died in the early hours of this morning.
Giving evidence at the special sitting of the court, Detective Sergeant Shay Keevans told Judge Gerard Furlong that Mr Hewison offered no reply when charged.
Mr Hewison was bailed with conditions attached.
