A newly appointed junior minister appears to have broken ranks with the Government and said Garda Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan "may well have to resign".
Fine Gael's John Paul Phelan, who was appointed as Minister of State for Local Government and Electoral Reform, said some of the things that have emerged were "appalling" - appearing to refer to revelations at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
However speaking on RTÉ's Saturday with Claire Byrne, he also said that the outcome of an upcoming PAC report, the Charleton Inquiry, and an upcoming audit should not be pre-judged.
He said: "I'm not going to defend, and some of the things that have come out are appalling, but there are investigations and Justice Charleton is chairing a bigger investigation.
"There is a second audit report, plus a second PAC report and it may well be that she has to go... But you have to look at the reports. And see what comes out. You can't prejudge."
