Two gardaí have been assaulted in Finglas in north Dublin.

A garda sergeant received injuries to his face and a female garda's wrist was broken after the two officers had approached a number of men at Aylward Green shortly before 2am this morning.

Both were taken to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown to be treated for their injuries.

Two men in their 20s have been arrested in connection with the attack and are due in court today. 

It follows a separate incident in Claremorris in Co Mayo in the early hours of yesterday during which two gardaí were also attacked.

The male and female gardaí were admitted to hospital after being set upon by three men at Kilcolman Road in the town after responding to an incident.

The male garda is receiving medical treatment for his injuries. Three men have been arrested.
