A candidate for the Labour Party at both the 2007 and 2011 general elections, when he failed to win a seat either time, Mr Heffernan was subsequently elected to the Seanad on the Agricultural Panel in 2011. He left Labour in 2012 and is contesting this election for the Social Democrats.
