Testing times for third-level education

The crisis of funding for higher and further education is, arguably, the biggest education issue facing any new government.

As part of a campaign of action to address issues such as under-funding and lack of resources, lecturers in the institutes of technology are set to stage a one-day strike on Wednesday.

At the recent launch of the Government's new Skills Strategy at Blackrock College of Further Education, RTÉ's Education Correspondent Emma O Kelly spoke to lecturers and students about the difficulties facing the sector.

A brief guide to "fiscal space"

On RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Sean Whelan, RTÉ Economics Correspondent, explains "fiscal space" and how much "free money" might be available.

Fiach Kelly of the Irish Times looks at what this money might mean for the various parties and how they differ in what to do with it.

The Yes vote factor

Record numbers turned out to vote in the same-sex marriage referendum last May. Stephen Murphy, on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, spoke to election hopefuls, referendum campaigners and voters to find out if the overwhelming Yes vote could give certain parties or candidates any sort of boost in the General Election.

Political analyst Noel Whelan, co-author of "Ireland Says Yes: The Inside Story of How the Vote for Marriage Equality Was Won", said he thinks that politicians who pushed the Yes vote could do well.
