US President Donald Trump has asked faith leaders at an annual prayer breakfast to pray for Arnold Schwarzenegger's television ratings.

On his maiden visit to the political and religious event, Mr Trump took a joking swipe at his successor as host of 'The Apprentice'.

"They hired a big, big movie star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to take my place, and we know how that turned out: The ratings went right down the tubes. It's been a total disaster."

"I want to just pray for Arnold, if we can for those ratings, okay?" Trump said.

Mr Schwarzenegger took over as host of the show on NBC television after Mr Trump ditched the boardroom for his foray into politics.

Mr Trump remains an executive producer on the show.

It is not the first time he has taken on 'The Terminator' star.

A few weeks before being sworn in as the 45th president of the United States, Mr Trump took to Twitter to mock his 'Apprentice' successor.

Mr Schwarzenegger, a former California governor, was among the Republican figures who refused to back Mr Trump's bid for the presidency.

He responded to Trump's comments today with a brief video statement.

"Hey, Donald, I have a great idea," Schwarzenegger said. "Why don't we switch jobs? You take over TV, because you're such an expert in ratings. And I take over your job. And then people can finally sleep comfortably again."
