At least 14 people have been killed and another 70 injured after a flyover under construction collapsed in a busy Indian city.
Firefighters and residents used their bare hands to rescue those trapped under the wreckage of the metal-and-cement structure that came down in a busy commercial district of Kolkata.
Television footage from the scene showed a hand reaching out from under what appeared to be a massive girder.
People were trying to hand bottles of water to survivors pinned underneath.
"The condition is pathetic. At this moment no one has any clue how many people are trapped," said a police officer at the scene.
A coordinated rescue operation was slow to get under way, with access for heavy lifting gear and ambulances restricted by the buildings on either side of the flyover and heavy traffic.
Police said 78 injured people had been taken to Kolkata's Medical College Hospital after the disaster struck at around noon.
A witness said two buses carrying more than 100 passengers were trapped. Eight taxis and six auto rickshaws were partly visible in the wreckage.
The flyover has been under construction since 2009 and has missed several deadlines for completion.
Construction projects in India have long been plagued by lax safety standards.
