European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has called an extraordinary meeting of several European leaders on Sunday to tackle the refugee emergency in the western Balkans.
A statement from the Commission said the heads of state or government of Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia were invited.
"In view of the unfolding emergency in the countries along the western Balkans migratory route, there is a need for much greater cooperation, more extensive consultation and immediate operational action," Mr Juncker's office said.
The mini-summit comes as tens of thousands of refugees trying to reach Germany are stranded on the roads of western Balkan countries in worsening autumn weather.
Hungary has sealed its borders with Serbia and Croatia, triggering a chain reaction in other overwhelmed states.
The meeting, to take place between 3pm and 6pm followed by a working dinner, would also include the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres, the European Asylum Support Office and EU border agency Frontex, the statement said.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has welcomed Mr Juncker's decision to call the meeting.
A spokesperson for the German government told a news conference: "The ongoing refugee crisis can only be tackled if everybody works on it together."
Meanwhile, firefighters and paramedics are attending Brezice refugee camp in Slovenia after a fire broke out there.
