A Bill is about to be introduced in the United States Senate which would give up to 10,000 working visas to Irish people but would stop short of allowing them to become citizens.
The proposal is likely to be hotly debated.
The new bill is being sponsored by New York Senator Charles Schumer and would offer up to 10,000 working visas per year to Irish citizens to work in the United States.
They would have to have a high level of education but exactly how high is not clear yet.
The visas would be called E3 visas and are similar to the ones given to Australians, who can work in the US if they find a sponsoring employer.
They are not Green Cards and do not offer the prospect of citizenship.
It is also unclear exactly if the illegal Irish already in the US would be able to take advantage of the visas.
This is very early stages in the legislation and it has opponents, including Charles Grassley from Iowa, who has just confirmed to RTÉ News that he will oppose the legislation.
