A British man has died in a shark attack in the Seychelles.

The 30-year-old victim, named by police as Ian Redmond, was reportedly on honeymoon when the attack happened yesterday off Anse Lazio beach on Praslin, the second largest island in the archipelago.

The British Foreign Office has confirmed the death and said it was providing consular assistance to his family.

A 36-year-old French tourist died on 1 August after he suffered injuries which appeared to have been caused by a shark.

Seychelles director for tourism Alain St Ange said attempts were being made to catch the shark.

He said authorities had requested experts from South Africa to help identify the shark.

Seychelles minister for home affairs and environment Joel Morgan was said to have held an emergency meeting in the capital, Victoria.

Praslin is the site of the Vallee de Mai Unesco World Heritage Site, where the rare coco-de-mer tree grows.
