The 45-storey Citigroup Tower in Canary Wharf London is to be sold by owners Glen Maud and Derek Quinlan.

The building, which is the third tallest in the UK, was bought for £1bn in 2007 by Mr Maud’s PropInvest and Quinlan Private from Royal Bank of Scotland.

It was one of the biggest ever property deals in the UK.

The tower is expected to be marketed at an asking price in excess of £1bn in order to pay back debt raised by the purchasers from a consortium of German and Irish banks.

According to a report in the Financial Times, Citigroup pays about £53m in annual rent.

The paper says there is considerable demand for prime properties such as the Citygroup Tower, with interest especially strong from sovereign wealth funds.
