The Afghan government said that an argument caused an Afghan soldier to shoot dead two US civilian trainers at a military camp.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force said the Afghan killed the two Americans during shooting training in the northern province of Balkh yesterday.

The shooter and another Afghan soldier also died as a result of the incident at the camp outside the provincial capital Mazar-i-Sharif.

‘It's said that after a verbal argument between an army soldier and his two US trainers the soldier opened fire, killing the two trainers and injuring another one,’ the Afghan defence ministry said.

‘Also, in return fire two elements of the Afghan army, including the shooter, lost their lives and another soldier was injured,’ it said.

Afghanistan is building up its security forces with the aim of being able to take responsibility for security by the end of 2014, allowing tens of thousands of US and NATO forces to leave.

An international conference in Kabul yesterday endorsed President Hamid Karzai's plan, which he originally announced when he took office for a second five-year term in November.
