The Obama administration is to sue the US state of Arizona over its controversial new immigration law.

Arizona's two Senators have slammed the plans by the US president.

‘The American people must wonder whether the Obama administration is really committed to securing the border when it sues a state that is simply trying to protect its people by enforcing immigration law,’ Republicans John McCain and Jon Kyl said in a joint statement.

The lawmakers said it was ‘far too premature’ for the US government to sue the state over the law ‘since it has not yet been enforced.’

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a 8 June interview with Ecuadoran television channel NTN24 that the federal government would file a lawsuit against Arizona over the law.

The law, which is set to take effect on 29 July, makes it a crime to be in Arizona without proper immigration papers and requires local police, who are not federal agents responsible for immigration matters, to determine if people are in the country legally.
