Thailand has lifted an overnight curfew in Bangkok and several provinces which had been imposed after last week's riots and arson attacks.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said: ‘We will not have to extend it. The situation is under control now.’

The curfew was put in place on 19 May after Bangkok suffered the worst riots in the country's modern history, in which at least 85 people were killed and nearly 2,000 injured since 10 April.

The Prime Minister said the state of emergency remained in place.

This gives the army broad powers, allows authorities to suspend certain civil liberties, bans public gatherings of more than five people and stops media reporting news that 'causes panic'.

Abhisit said that the holding of elections this year was unlikely.

'Obviously, it's a lot more difficult to hold elections by the end of the year,' he said at a news conference.

He said peace needed to be fully restored after deadly riots last week involving anti-government protesters and that a reconciliation plan needed to be implemented.
