Moriarty Tribunal may issue interim report

The Chairman of the Moriarty Tribunal has written to party leaders in the Dáil to say he is considering preparing an interim report on the work of the Tribunal.

The news follows criticism of the length of time the Tribunal is taking.

Opposition leaders asked Taoiseach Brian Cowen for a meeting of party leaders to consider the report.

Mr Cowen said this would be considered 'in due course.'

Labour leader Eamon Gilmore said the letter outlined some of the reasons for the delays, including legal challenges, among them the ones taken by former Taoiseach Charles Haughey.

It also states that the remaining work of the Tribunal is to be split into two parts - one dealing with the 'money trail', which may be the subject of an early report, and the second dealing with other matters.
