Petrol & diesel prices may fall

Pumps - Prices set to drop

The cost of petrol and diesel may come down over the next few weeks.

Fuel monitoring website www.pumps.ie, says its statistics show filling stations are beginning to lower their prices.

Almost 70% of fuel prices here is tax. Consumers are paying up to 27% more at the pumps compared to this time last year.

The last time fuel prices were as high as they are now was August 2008 when the cost of oil increased to around $140 a barrel. Today, it costs up to $80 dollars a barell.

AA Roadwatch has acknowledged that the high prices are partly due to the fact that the euro is weak to the dollar but it also blames the high excise and carbon taxes that have been put on fuel during the past two budgets.
