A suicide attack near a foreign guesthouse in the Afghan capital Kabul has killed eight people and wounded 40.

Interior ministry spokesman Zamarai Bashary said: 'Eight people have been killed. Four are women.

'Four others are men and 40 other people have been wounded. It was a suicide bombing.'

The attack came as President Hamid Karzai convened a conference on corruption in another part of the city.

President Karzai said: 'There was an explosion in Wazir Akbar Khan near a foreign guesthouse, which was also close to my former first vice president's house. Two of his bodyguards have been martyred.'
