President McAleese has attended a memorial service in Dublin for the Air Corps Captain Derek Furniss who died in a plane crash in Connemara five days ago.
The chief mourners were Captain Furniss's parents, Paula and Eoghan, and his partner of nine years, Leslie.
Also present was the Minister for Defence, Willie O'Dea, the Taoiseach's Aide de Camp, and the Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Dermot Earley.
Capt Furniss was buried with full military honours at Kilmashogue Cemetery, at Edmondstown Road in Co Dublin.
His colleague, Air Corps cadet, David Jevens, also died in the crash.
His funeral took place in Co Wexford yesterday.
Capt Furniss joined the Defence Forces in October 1994 and was a qualified pilot since 1996 and a qualified flight instructor since 1999.
He had over 3,000 flight hours and was the Chief Flight Instructor on the Pilatus aircraft and member of the Air Corps PC-9 Display Team.
