Major earthquake hits Pacific

A earthquake which struck in the Pacific Ocean has now been upgraded to magnitude 8.3.

An official of the US National Park Service said there had been deaths in American Samoa from a resulting tsunami, but there was no word on how many people had died.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has issued a statement saying the tsunami 'may have been destuctive along coasts near the earthquake epicentre'.

A tsunami has reportedly been observed on the island of Pago Pago, according to the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Centre.

The epicenter of the quake was located 190km southwest of American Samoa, a remote Pacific island, the U.S. Geological Survey.

It struck at a depth of 33km.
