Suu Kyi appeals conviction
Thursday, 3 September 2009 09:54Burma's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has lodged an appeal against her conviction for breaching the terms of her house arrest.
The Nobel laureate was ordered to spend 18 months in detention at her lakeside home in Burma, officially known as Myanmar.
She was found guilty on 11 August of giving shelter to US man John Yettaw, who swam to the property in May.
'We have submitted the appeal to the court,' said her lawyer Kyi Win.
The court will hear initial arguments from Ms Suu Kyi's lawyers tomorrow.
It will then decide whether to officially consider the appeal, said Nyan Win, another of her lawyers and the spokesman for her National League for Democracy.
Ms Suu Kyi, 64, had insisted on her innocence during the trial, saying that she allowed John Yettaw to stay for two nights at her home because he was ill.
Mr Yettaw was sentenced to seven years' hard labour for his actions.
However, he was freed after a visit by US senator Jim Webb last month, on what the regime said were compassionate grounds because of health problems.
