Fighting is raging for a second day running in the city of Maiduguri in northern Nigeria after clashes between security forces and Islamist radicals left more than 100 dead yesterday.

Witnesses reported gunshots and a column of smoke rising over the city early today.

Violence erupted at the weekend after an Islamic fundamentalist group, styling itself on Afghanistan's Taliban, went on a rampage, attacking police stations, prisons, churches and government institutions across four northern states.

Authorities have so far confirmed 55 only deaths in two states, Bauchi and Yobe.
