The Garda Ombudsman has begun an investigation into the death of a retired Garda in a shooting incident in Co Leitrim.
A statement from An Garda Síochána said the Garda was in Carrick-on-Shannon Garda Station when he died in an incident involving an official firearm shortly before 10am.
No-one else was involved in the incident.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The State Pathologist’s office has been informed and a post mortem examination is due to be carried out tomorrow at Sligo General Hospital.
