Eight people were rescued after severe weather conditions hit a race event in the Snowdonia mountain range in Wales.

The eight were taking part in the Welsh 1000m Peaks Race, were rescued by police and mountain rescue volunteers working with two RAF helicopters.

An RAF spokesman said one person remains stranded but accounted for after the race was abandoned due to heavy wind and rain.

Around 600 people had been expected to take part in today's race, but only 245 actually started it.

A North Wales Police spokeswoman said the race began at around 9am, with calls to police coming in from 10am due to the ‘atrocious weather conditions’.
