British authorities are seeking access to a pregnant woman who has been sentenced to life in prison for drug trafficking.
Samantha Orobator, 20, was arrested last August after being caught with 680g of heroin while trying to board a plane to Thailand.
She became pregnant while in prison and her Dublin-based mother has since made emotional appeals for her release.
Jane Orobator, who is originally from Nigeria but is a student at Trinity College, has said she has no idea how her daughter was found in possession of heroin at Wattay Airport.
A British Foreign Office spokeswoman in London said officials in Laos need to consult with Orobator to determine if she wants to apply to serve her sentence in Britain or appeal the decision.
British Foreign Secretary David Miliband signed a prisoner transfer agreement with Laos's deputy premier Thongloun Sisoulith in London on 7 May.
Orobator was given the life sentence but spared the death penalty after a half-day trial in Laos. Normally anyone found in Laos with over 500g of heroin faces the death penalty.
British legal charity Reprieve, which earlier sent a representative to Laos in a bid to assist Orobator, has said she is due to give birth in September.
