Three drown off coast of Zanzibar

At least three people drowned when a cargo ship capsized off the coast of Zanzibar last night.

Mustaf Jumbe, head of Zanzibar's main port of Stone Town, said search operations were launched late yesterday and are continuing today.

‘So far, we have recovered three bodies and 27 people were rescued,’ he said.

The MV Fatih had left Dar-es-Salaam on Friday afternoon and sank just before berthing at Stone Town around 9pm last night.

Its captain Usi Ali Usi told reporters that he experienced problems with the ship's rudder before realising that the hull was leaking.

The total number of people on board has not yet been established.
