US President Barack Obama has said congressional approval of his $787bn economic stimulus bill is a 'major milestone on our road to recovery.'

He said he would sign the legislation into law 'shortly'.

The biggest financial rescue package in US history cleared its final legislative hurdle overnight.

The final approval for the massive stimulus plan came less than four weeks after President Obama assumed office.

The Democtaric speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, last night described Barack Obama as one remarkable president.

She made her comments after the house voted by 248 votes to 183 to support the stimulus bill.

However, it came at a political price: not one Republican representative supported it.

And in the Senate a short time later only three Republicans voted in favour.

Despite this, the passing of the bill is seen as a major boost for Mr Obama.

With the US losing up to 20,000 jobs each day, the president had warned that if the package was not passed quickly the country was facing a catastrophe, an economic meltdown.
