Emergency services have been monitoring the situation in Clonmel, Co Tipperary where several streets are under water and residents had to be evacuated from their homes.
The local council, army and civil defence are all working to deal with the situation and sandbags have been distributed.
Up to 40 residents had to be evacuated from their homes in the town after the River Suir burst its banks. Extensive damage has been caused to properties in the town.
Gardaí have asked motorists to avoid Clonmel. All bridges are closed including the Gas House Bridge and access from the Waterford side is blocked.
A nursing home in Nenagh also had to be evacuated after a nearby river burst its banks this morning.
35 residents of the Riverdale Nursing Home were taken from the building by emergency services when it began to flood.
They were given alternative accommodation in local hospitals and hotels and all are safe and well.
Two of the residents were taken to Nenagh General Hospital as a precaution because of their medical history but are described as comfortable.
Gardaí say the flooding has now receeded but it is not clear how long it will be before the residents can return to the home.
Flooding has also been reported on roads in Cork, Cavan, Offaly and Westmeath.
