Strong quake off east coast of Japan

There has been a strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake off the east coast of Japan but it caused no damage or injuries.

The quake hit 139km east-southeast of Iwaki in Fukushima prefecture in the north of Japan's main island of Honshu, at about 7.30pm local time (10.30 Irish time).

Although it was a shallow quake, only 10km deep, the Japan Meteorological Agency said there was no tsunami, but there might be 'slight sea level changes' due to the earthquake.

Around 20% of the world's most powerful earthquakes strike Japan.
