Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has threatened to expel US ambassador James McGee whom he accused of meddling in the country's internal affairs.

‘Tall as he is, if he continues doing that (meddling), I will kick him out of the country,' he said in a speech to launch his campaign ahead of a presidential run-off election next month.

Mr McGee angered the regime on 13 May when he organised a tour of hospitals with other Western diplomats to see victims of political violence in the aftermath of a first round of voting in March.

He was summoned afterwards for what was described as a ‘first warning'.

On a visit to one of the hospitals, Mr McGee became embroiled in a stand-off with four armed police who tried to prevent him from leaving the grounds before relenting after around 10 minutes.

Mr Mugabe said Mr McGee had ordered opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai to come back to the country.

Mr Tsvangirai, who had been out of the country for more than six weeks lobbying regional leaders to pressure Mr Mugabe, returned home yesterday.

‘When the American ambassador said come back to Morgan he came back frog-jumping,’ Mr Mugabe said.
