Several hundred people attended a special mass last night for Paul Newton, the Connacht rugby supporter seriously assaulted in an unprovoked attack in Belfast city centre at the weekend.
The mass for Mr Newton, 43, was said at St Mary's GAA club in Sligo, where he is a former chairman.
Mr Newton suffered severe head and facial injuries when he was attacked near Benedict's Hotel at Bradbury Place close to the city centre.
Mr Newton, who lives in Sligo, is in intensive care in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where his wife and family members are maintaining a bedside vigil.
Police inquiries into the assault are continuing.
