Somalia's Islamist fighters have seized control of the town of Jowhar after clashes with government troops.

At least seven people are believed to have been killed in the recent fighting.

Somalia has had no effective government since warlords overthrew dictator Mohammed Siad Barre in 1991 and then turned on each other.

According to a new report published today, the UN children's agency said Somalia is the worst place in the world for children.

Approximately one in seven children under the age of five in Somalia are acutely malnourished.

A group of 40 aid agencies also said Somalia now has one million internal refugees, their numbers have increased due to an exodus from Mogadishu of 20,000 in one month.
