Two Irish held in anti-terrorism operation

Two Irish citizens have been arrested in Lithuania as part of an anti-terrorism operation.

The two were allegedly trying to buy a large amount of firearms and explosives for the Real IRA.

In a statement, the Lithuanian Prosecutor General's office said that the Irish citizens were arrested following an operation aimed at preventing the purchase of illegal arms and explosives.

The operation was carried out by officers of the state security department and the Defence Ministry's special unit.

The two were caught as a result of an international police operation involving gardaí, British intelligence services and the Lithuanian police.

Gardaí say they are assisting the Lithuanian police in their investigations.

One of those arrested is a man from Dundalk, with close family connections to the Real IRA.
